One hundred union members from several locals, traveled to Northern Nevada as volunteers for the Member to Member campaign on behalf of Barack Obama’s race for the presidency.
Friday, October 24th, volunteers departed from local 721 and headed for Las Vegas. On the way there, we picked up other members from the San Bernardino office, and we also had briefing and training to prepare us for the volunteer work.
Talking points for volunteers included topics such as, the importance of voting for Barack Obama, rebuilding the middle class, the Freedom of Choice Act and the improvement of our health care systems. There were a lot of interesting people including voters with different views. However, they were very excited and motivated by the importance of the event and the work that we were doing. In order to sway undecided voters, we explained the importance of Obama’s health care and tax reform and the impact it would have as opposed to John McCain’s policies. It was important to explain that Obama is the change we need.
Among the highlights were up close encounters with Obama. Political Director, Jeanette Sanchez and her daughter, Amanda went to see Obama at Bonanza High School in Las Vegas. Jeanette and Amanda, 11, were able to make their way to the front of the crowd where Obama shook their hand! After the speech, Jeanette and her daughter realized the importance of voting and getting involved at an early age.
This volunteer work was a great experience. Members mingled and got to know one another as we shared experiences while door knocking. Obama is now our President Elect and I am proud to have participated in this campaign.
