Will Homecare Workers' Ever Get a Raise?
On Tuesday June 17, 2008 I went with a group of union members to the Board
of Supervisors downtown. 
At first we picketed outside with signs that said such statements as "Be
Fair to Seniors", "The Sick and Disable Deserve Respect", and "Long-term Care
Workers Need A Raise". We marched around and said these and other chants.
Next we went inside to the Board of Supervisors meeting. It was in a large
room. I saw a member of the Bargaining Committee retrieve some pamphlets from a
railing which separated the audience from the Supervisors and their staff. I
took a chance and did the same. They contained the agenda, told the Supervisors'
names and meeting rules.

Campaign Kicks Off

The County Federation of Labor teamed up with members of the community on Saturday, March 29th at the Mark-Ridley Thomas Campaign Headquarters, to form the Alliance for a Stronger Community to elect Senator Ridley Thomas as the Supervisor of the Second District.
Over 200 trade unionists came together to participate in the opening ceremonies led by Maria Elena Surazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. The program rally campaign kick-off panel included Ralph Miller, president, AFSCME Local 685, Angie Thompson, probation officer, Virginia Johnson, SEIU 721 work site organizer, James Harris, Community Coalition Leader, Larry Grose of the Coalition for Economic Survival and our very own Amanda Figueroa, the Secretary-Treasurer of SEIU-ULTCW.

2nd Supervisorial District Debate
On February 9th, 2008, the 2nd supervisorial district debate was held at Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. The three candidates – State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard C. Parks and community activist Morris Griffin -- met to discuss who would make the best replacement for retiring board member Yvonne Brathwaite Burke.

Sentinel, KJLH host Supervisors Race Debate
Three candidates participated in a debate held Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Holman United Methodist Church in South Los Angeles.
Former Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard Parks, State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas and community activist Morris Griffin are vying for a seat on the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, that will soon be vacant after Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke’s term is completed. The election is scheduled for June 3.
