For those of you who could not attend, our rallies just keep getting better!

Our rally in December brought even more people together. We had about 80 people this time. We also had a different emphasis. When it came our turn to speak, we presented the supervisors with a giant facsimile check for $59 million dollars.

San Bernardino Candle Light Vigil

san bernardino candle light vigilOn November 26th, a candle light vigil was held in San Bernardino. Homecare workers and union members met at the San Bernardino union office on Arrowhead Avenue. At 4 p.m. we all walked down to the county offices to fight for our new contract and healthcare coverage.

Oakland Member Reporter Training

Roland AlsupThursday, November 13th marks the day that member reporters attended training in the beautiful city of Oakland. Among those in attendance were: Sherry Liddell, Brenda Blannon, Roland Alsup, Mao Ling Sieu, Yuan Mei Jiang, Ouyang Kelian and Francisco Daza.

English, Spanish and Chinese speakers were able to come together in an effort to enhance their reporting skills. Member reporters learned about the various types of news leads, and practiced writing the opening paragraph to a story using different methods that were taught. Brenda Blannon executed her writing with skill as she wrote a contrast lead, which was given as an assignment. Brenda also volunteered to read her contrast lead out loud to everyone in attendance at the training.

I attended the Division 5 Pasadena Community Coffee on May 15th at Rocio Dunne’s home in North Pasadena. A total of 10 Home Care Workers plus Rocio Dunne, Kiya Stokes (SEIU Division 5 Staff), Kathryn Wright (SEIU Community Relations Coordinator) and guest Harold Sterker, SEIU Local 721 attended the meeting.

Political Struggles Dramatized

The room was packed for the LTCAT (Long Term Care Action Team) meeting on Saturday March 29, 2008. After dinner had been served, a special program about women in history was presented. Women member of the union read speeches and acted out the lives of five different pioneers of labors.

First up was Clara Brisco, who portrayed Setina Poinsette Clarke, often referred to as the godmother of the Civil Rights movement. Setina was a teacher in S. Carolina who petitioned for black principals to work for the schools in black neighborhoods. Setina taught African Americans to read so that they could vote. She was involved with the NAACP and the YWCA. Later she became the Director of Education and Literacy for Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership conference.

Member Organizers are Honored

Fair Share for web 1Festive yellow and purple balloons floated above the crowd as two hundred Member Organizers met last Friday to attend an awards dinner that was held in their honor.

Having phoned and visited thousands of fellow workers in Los Angeles County since last November to ask them to join in the struggle for a better life, Member Organizers felt strongly about the work.

Hollywood Division 3 Meeting

Our first Hollywood Division 3 meeting was held on Jan. 30 .  It was hosted by Rene Gonzalez and Evelyn Hawks.  Kathy Kensinger, District 3 organizer, welcomed the members.
