The Prediction has been Fulfilled

An African American, 47-year-old Barack Obama radically changed the history of the United States on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 9 p.m. On this day, he was declared President of the most powerful country in the world.
He overwhelmingly won this election with 70 % of the Latino vote. After a final hour of the electoral process and with more than 365 electoral votes, McCain called Obama to congratulate him and to recognize his defeat.

Budget Cuts

Members of SEIU united on a trip to Sacramento where we protested against the Governor’s proposed budget cuts. We also spoke with legislators, including Mary Hayashi and her Chief of Staff, Mr. Jasperson.
The Chief of Staff informed us that they needed 54 votes to pass a tax revenue bill. They also needed the Republicans to vote for tax revenues and also to vote against the Governor’s proposed budget cuts to long term care programs. There is a 28 billion dollar deficit, and the money to fill it should not be coming from the IHSS program.

Working To Preserve The Budget
September 13th, 2008: The United Long Term Care Senior Association teamed up with Congress of California Seniors as a part of the letter writing campaign foraged by ULTCW to urge the governor to support and pass a quality budget.
The group gathered at Angelus Plaza, downtown Los Angeles, where Congress of California Seniors offices reside to urge seniors living at the facility to speak up for them selves and tell the governor about their personal struggles. The group collected 20 letters.
ULTC Seniors have been working tirelessly with other disability and senior advocacy groups to ensure that our California Legislature knows to preserve funding to service provider programs that enables a quality life.

Where is the Balance?

I went to Sacramento on September 10, 2008 to oppose the proposed budget cuts. Before I testified, I had the opportunity to hear the effect these cuts would have on various agencies throughout the state.
I kept hearing about numbers as if they were just that -- numbers. It appears that our legislators have forgotten that these numbers are people. People's lives and their quality of life hang in the balance.
