Christmas Spirit on the Go

member reporterIt all started when I was passing Kathy Kessinger’s office and she asked, “Rene, would you like to do some volunteer work for a couple of days?”

On his 99th birthday, I went to visit Vincent James Montesano. Linda Allen, a homecare provider, invited us to Mr. Montesano’s apartment in downtown Los Angeles. Linda has been caring for Mr. Montesano for nine years and I was overwhelmed by all the wonderful work that she provided for Vincent.

Who Really Cares

On July 14, 2008, I attended the Jurisdictional Hearings in Manhattan Beach, CA.  While I was having breakfast, I met Ms. Jerry Galbreth and daughter Val Hale, who is her care provider.  It has been said, there is no greater love than that of a mother for her child; it was shown to me that actually there is no greater love than that of a child for its mother.

Humility and dedication at its finest, and love with great pride but little reward, goes with the territory of being a certified nurse assistant.  Hard work, long hours, back aching, sore feet, hot or cold, rain or shine, look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s a hardworking care giver.  Year after year looking for a glimpse of the rainbow.  When are we going to reach the promised land?

We Heard Them Telling Their Stories in Sacramento

There was a video conference meeting at our union hall in Los Angeles. A bus load of our members went to Sacramento to the State Assembly budgetary hearing. Patty Berg heard testimony for those who wanted to speak against the budget cuts for long term care. Ms. Berg chairs the Assembly budget committee which oversees health and human service spending. She also has chaired the Assembly Committee on Aging and Long Term Care.

Statewide Conference Call On Healthcare Reform

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon as health care workers attended a statewide meeting that involved ULTCW offices in Ventura, Santa Cruz, San Bernardino, Alameda and Solano.  The magic of video conferencing allowed everyone to attend, including President Tyrone Freeman.

Healthcare Reform Bill holds Promise for Uninsured

Over 200 ULTCW members braved threatening storms Sunday to hear Torrance Assemblyman Ted Leiu speak at the Los Angeles Union Hall on the healthcare reform bill.

Long-term care union members from Del Norte to Imperial counties also joined President Tyrone Freeman and Secretary Treasurer Amanda Figueroa in Los Angeles via video teleconference for the update.
