Bargaining Continues in Los Angeles

Brothers and Sisters,

On Thursday, July 10th at our union headquarters, bargaining opened with us submitting a package proposal that included wages, employee health benefits including Dental, union security and term. We set a condition: that management must accept the entire package with no exceptions, "the whole package or nothing". The proposal is below the fold:

Bargaining Is No Bargain...

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
 
Once again, we went back to the bargaining table to continue our struggle with the Public Assistance Service Council (PASC) members.  As you already know from past reporting, the Public Assistance Service Council bargaining representatives refused to meet with SEIU Local 6434 Bargaining Team over a dispute regarding Home Care Providers wages. Approximately 17.5% of  IHSS wages comes from the County of Los Angeles, 32.5% from the State of California and 50% from the Federal government. If the State of California portion reverts back to $8.00 per hour as the Governor proposed, the County of Los Angeles would have to come up with the rest of the money; this is very unlikely.

Bargaining Team Gets Ready

On May 5th, workers gathered at union headquarters to prepare for the 2008 session of bargaining with PASC over a new contract. Wendy Duchen from the Education Department distributed and reviewed our current contract agreement between the Personal Assistance Service Council ("PASC") and the United Long-Term Care Workers' Union, SEIU Local 6434.

That agreement, dated January 23, 2007, specified that a new SEIU entity, Services Employees International Union, Local 6434 - United Long Term Care Workers' Union would assume all representation and contracted rights and obligations previously held by SEIU 434B.
