More than a dozen civic organizations teamed up with SEIU-ULTCW Local 6434 in an effort to forge stronger local connections at the Building Bridges Community Partnership Mixer held at La Bodeguita de Pico Restaurant on Thursday evening (May 1).

ULTCW President Tyrone Freeman and Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti were the featured speakers at the event, which also was attended by representatives from the UCLA Labor Center, Community Coalition, the NAACP, the American Lung Association of California, ACORN, the Jewish Labor Committee and the United Negro College Fund, among several others.

"I challenge all of you to work with us to build a bridge across the river of despair to the promised land," said Freeman.  "We can get there if we all work together and have the same goal in mind."

The purpose of the event was to provide a networking opportunity for these organizations so they could unite toward building a stronger community.

Among the goals:  To create four new city-wide coalitions--or Bridges Committees--that will deal with health care, education, youth empowerment and senior advocacy.
